Nestled in the heart of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith campus, Varanasi, Bharat Mata temple is an abode of relief map of undivided India. There exists no deity or statue in the temple but it has a huge marble map of India on the floor. According to historians, the Bharat Mata temple was commenced by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt in the year 1918 and was completed in 1924. The temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1936. The two-storey temple was constructed under the guidance of Durga Prasad Khatri by 25 masons and 30 workers and their names are engraved on a plaque in one of the corners of the temple. The five pillars in the temple denote the five natural elements air, water, fire, earth and sky.

The map is made of marble was brought from Makrana which is now in Pakistan. The map of undivided India includes Pakistan, Afghanistan, Balochistan, Burma (Myanmar), Bangladesh and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The map displays 450 mountain range, peaks, plains, oceans, rivers, water bodies with latitudes and longitudes. With the help of laser torch, one can also catch a glimpse of small islands carved in the oceans, the Great Wall of China, small pecks in the oceans around the sub-continent. It is a perfect place for history lovers to know more about the great history of India. 

Independence Day and Republic Day:

On the occasion of Independence Days and Republic Days, the water bodies showing on the map are filled with water and the land will be decorated with flowers and it grabs the attention of the visitors.  

Timings to visit:

One can pay a visit to Unique Bharat Mata temple from 9:30 am to 8 pm with irrespective of any season. 

 How to Reach?

Bharat Mata temple is located in the heart of Varanasi and just one km away from Cantt, Varanasi and two km from Busstand. It is just 8 km from Banaras Hindu University. It will take just 15 minutes of travel from Varanasi Junction railway station and bus stand and multiple vehicles available for the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith campus.
