Blue Flag, the much-awaited dream of Andhra Pradesh came true after Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) accorded coveted Blue Flag to the magnificent ‘Rushikonda beach’ of Visakhapatnam. The Centre and tourism department officials worked hard from the past two and a half years to secure the Blue Flag for Rushikonda beach after fulfilling 33 criteria. What is Blue Flag Certification?
Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised iconic voluntary awards for beaches, marinas and sustainable boating tourism operators. The main motto of Blue Flag certification is to connect the public with the surroundings and encouraging them to learn more about the environment. To secure the Blue Flag, it needs to fulfil the criteria a series of a stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility. Blue Flag is an eco-labelled trusted by zillions of people across the Blue Planet and the main aim is to promote the sustainable tourism through environmental education.
Rushikonda Beach – Blue Flag
Rushikonda, the scenic nature destination of Vishakhapatnam is the only beach in Andhra Pradesh selected among 13 beaches in India by the Centre to develop it as a part of the Blue Flag project. The Central government concentrated more on developmental works of the project and sanctioned Rs 7.3 crore for the works.
Rushikonda beach enchants the domestic and international tourists with its turquoise waters, placid nature, chirping sounds of birds, marine creatures and livelihood of locals. Now, an open gymnasium, play area for children provide blissful moments to the visitors. To maintain the cleanliness of the beach, the officials appointed beach cleaners, supervisors, beach manager and they work round the clock to ensure the cleanliness. Stroll across walking and jogging tracks amid the misty breezes which rejuvenates ourselves from mundane lifestyle.
Officials concentrated on grey-water treatment, Bio-toilet blocks, solar treatment facilities, water vending kiosks, bathing area and a solid waste management unit.
